Stop software auto loading - reduce switch on time

Most new software and accessory installations (e.g. printers) seem to want to add icons to my task bar and auto load when I switch on.

The result is it takes me about 10 minutes to get operational which doesn't look good if with clients - how can I cut down this time?

I've seen share ware and cheap programs claiming to help with this by going into Registry, which I'm reluctant to risk. I searched the database, but I'm obviously using the wrong terminology as nothing came up?

10 minutes is crazy :-( XP should boot and be ready to go in about 40 seconds.
