Stop me accidentally over-writing files

Is there some way I can protect a file so it cannot be updated or deleted? At the same time, I want to be able to open it, edit it and then same the result with a different file name. It's all because I too often click "save" instead of "save as" in PagePlus, Word and Wavepad.

This applies to XP, probably other systems as well.

Highlight the file you want in Windows explorer.
Rt Click and choose Properties.
Tick the box at the bottom labelled Read Only.

You will be able to write to this file after the same proceedure but clearing that box.

save it to another file name without the danger of overwriting the original

I think that is acknowledged part of johnincrete's problem. Forgetting to Save As

Right click the file in Windows Explorer and set it as a Read only file
