Hi, trying to help a friend who's PC won't boot atall. Have made a Windows XP boot disk and when I restart and boot from the disk after a couple of seconds I end up with the MS-DOS a:\> prompt and am not sure what to do to start Windows from here. Have copied Ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini to the floppy disk. Do I need to copy these 3 files to the Hard drive now?
Thank you in advance.

You need 6 floppys to boot XP click here

or the XP CD

What exactly is the problem why are you trying to boot from floppy?

NTLDR Missing?
If you have FAT32 partitions, it is much simpler than with NTFS. Just boot with a Win98 floppy and copy the NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM files from the i386 directory to the root of the C:\ drive.

For NTFS:
Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Typically this will be #1 Enter in the administrator password when requested Enter in the following commands (X: is replaced by the actual drive letter that is assigned to the CD ROM drive) COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\: COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\ Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Try this if you can get to Command Prompt. It will run XP restore.

Try this at MS site, copy the link paste into address bar, the close the Space after // and press enter Print the Page off to follow it
