Start and Run Win on External HD? Live Win CD/DVD?

I want to know if it possible to start and run windows and applications on an external (usb/firewire) HD? The reason for this is laptop.

The laptop is getting really fast now, but the main thing hold it back is HD. I am thinking of get a large and fast external HD and run everything from it including boot up and run applications. So when I work on a desk (most time), I would boot and work on external fast HD. I really need fast HD access for capturing and editing videos. Use Laptop's build in HD when on the road.

Another question is: Is it possible to build a live Win CD/DVD? Same as some live linux CD.
Just want to know if it possible technically. This could provide a way to run different version of Windows especially when you cannot install things on machine.

The motherboard and BIOS needs to support USB booting before it will work.
