Start Up problem - help please!!

Hi Guys

Have an oldish Dell laptop at home which recently set up on Broadband and (after help on here!) has worked perfectly for a few months.

Closed computer down before Xmas which had no problem. Been away and tried to use it last night but wont work!!

Goes to screen saying it not closed down properly last time and taht can try and open in several different modes (safe mode, last known settings that worked etc etc) - tried all modes and wont work - clicks onto opening page of Windows XP but after few seconds just goes back to start up page again as above....

Not sure if relevant or not but when it tries to start up the computer is making a "clicking" type noise!!

Is there anything I can do to resolve this??

Thanks all....

This sometimes happens if you have a printer or scanner attached and switched on prior to starting up.

But the clicking sound is not a good omen - this could mean that your hard drive is seriously ill!
I hope you have all your important stuff backed up.

the clicking sound is either your hard drive (could be failing) or dvd drive (is there a disk in it)spinning.there are no other mechanical parts to make a noise. try putting the windows disk in and repairing windows.

If you know the make of HDD you can download their diagnostic software and make a floppy disc that will check out the HDD
