star sp298 serial printer not being picked up XP

  victormcd 22:44 07 May 2010

I have a problem with the above named printer which is serial not being recognised by an xp machine
I went and bought a serial to usb converter but still no joy
It will test print but when I ask it to print from the database the whole thing hangs saying 'setting up print object' and I have to reboot or use task manager to force it to quit.
It won't even print from cmd line.

I am all out of ideas after trying for a couple of hours to install drivers and various other things, can anyone help?

Don't know if this will help but there's a Manual and Driver download here -

I have all the drivers and manuals and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling them several times my next step is to play dip switch games with it on monday.

It's a clean install of xp and i am wondering whether the serial port is up the duff or the mobo drivers are all installed.

I only had a short time to mess with it before the weekend started and thought I might get you guys to throw suggestions at me!

1. are you sure its serial and not parallel (COM1 LPT1)?

The problem you describe often happens on parallel printers when the Bi-direction printing is not set in the BIOS.
