Every time I try to install SP2, from whatever source, it goes so far and then I get this message.Service Pack 2 setup error. The file C:\windows\system32\smss.exe is open or in use by another application.Close all other applications and then click retry.I then close everything else down, the same thing happens. My system runs XP Pro, I have 512mb RAM, 110GB HDD (master & slave).
Whoops! Actually meant SP 2.
Are you certain that it's smss, one m and two s's? I had just checked the Process Library to see whether you could kill it without making the system shaky and I can only find smmss, sms and smsss. In all cases, they are malware components.I'll check some other lists to be sure.
