SP" won't install

  yogibear 22:04 19 May 2006

Every time I try to install SP2, from whatever source, it goes so far and then I get this message.

Service Pack 2 setup error.

The file C:\windows\system32\smss.exe is open or in use by another application.

Close all other applications and then click retry.

I then close everything else down, the same thing happens.

My system runs XP Pro, I have 512mb RAM, 110GB HDD (master & slave).

Whoops! Actually meant SP 2.

Are you certain that it's smss, one m and two s's? I had just checked the Process Library to see whether you could kill it without making the system shaky and I can only find smmss, sms and smsss. In all cases, they are malware components.

I'll check some other lists to be sure.

Well, smss is on my systems, which are clean as a whistle, so it must be kosher. If you have the others, do some cleaning.

Got it. click here It's an important (alledgedly) component that shouldn't be killed.

May need to check for nasties, if you have ad-aware, could try a scan. If you have any other checkers you could scan with those as well.

No, it's defo smss.exe

Done a search and it comes up with 3 locations, one is system32, another is C:\$win_nt$,~bt\system32 , and the third is C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\16b2c96a0c41f4dfdb4d3cc228a4f819
