Sound Problems

Hi guys,

I'm working on this old machine for a friend of mine.

The machine is about 7 or 8 years old.

HP Brio Case
350 Watt PSU
AMD 3000+ (Single Core)
DDR 512 MB
40 GB IDE Hard Drive
XP Pro (SP3)
PCI Wireless Card

I get XP installed on this machine (even though I think its a bad idea but he wanted it installed) and everything is fine but its internal sound drivers don't work and it doesn't show up in the Device Manager. Then I try an external sound card and that doesn't work.

I'm thinking that the motherboard is dieing or maybe since the case doesn't really keep the internal temp down that heat has damaged something?

Any ideas or suggestions?

Are you sure that you've installed the correct sound drivers? Where did you get them from? Does the motherboard need the onboard sound to be enabled? If you can tell us what the motherboard is, we might be able to point you in the right direction.

The drivers for your motherboard, including the onboard sound are here. You can also download the motherboard manual which (on page 2-20) tells you how to enable or disable the onboard sound.
