What does Belarc tell you about your sound hardware or driver?

On board sound is AC97 ... have you check in the BIOS that AC97 is enabled.

AC97 is your onboard sound - it is not a sound card. You should check in the BIOS if AC97 is enabled.
You get into the BIOS by re-starting your pc and then pressing Del during the start-up. This will open the BIOS Main Menu, on the Menu screen you will see clear instructions as to how to navigate through the BIOS, navigate through to Peripherals where you should find mention of AC97 - make sure it is Enabled, then press F10 to save and exit the BIOS.

when i go to windows media player i get this
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly

Well done on your navigation. You could try uninstalling WMP and then re-installing it.
