Sorting in Excel

I have five columns the third one contains the dates and I want to sort the whole thing by date, however one of the cells doesn't contain a date only text saying 'date unavailable yet'

How do I do it, when I go to 'Data' and 'Sort' and then pick the column I want it to sort by it totally messes up the whole page.

Does the text mess it up and why can't it just put this at the bottom?

Any help appreciated!

Leave the cell blank (no text).

Leave the cell blank and that entry should appear at the bottom of the list.
If you haven't got a header row make sure that the "no header row" is ticked

Ok, I removed the text and then did the sort but now it just sorts by the 1st number in the date

eg 15.12.2003

how do I get it to sort by the whole date?

Have you told it this is a date field or just a text field. If its a text field it'll sort as you shown, if you format the fields as dates then it should sort properly.

Right click the cells, Format Cells..., Select a Date format

Cheers, now thats working!

Just one more question, the details I'm trying to sort take up two rows, whereas the date corresponding to these details only take up one row.

so now excel (Me) just sorts the date row and one line of detail, and the extra rows of detail are relagated to the bottom of the page.

How do I get it to recognise both rows of detail, sorry about all the questions but I'm completely lost here!

You'll have to duplicate the date in both rows.
