I have a Sony Vaio which has a problem in which the laptop will often not show a display when it is turned on. There is a flashing yellow light below the cylindtical symbol next to the battery light. Any idea what the cylindrical symbol means and why it caused my laptop to show a display?

Look in your owners manual for what it does.

Unfortunately I'm not sure where it is and I haven't been able to find anything on Google which helps

cylindrical symbol is hard drive flashes as it is being accessed as machine is booting up.

If its not booting fully then do a windows 10 startup repair click here

If the terminology displayed in your question is a indication of your knowledge of the operational parts of a Computer, I would take it to trusted repairer, if it is not booting sucessfully
