"SMC Not Responding" message

Nothing to really worry too much about at the moment, but I've begun getting a higher-than-usual number of freezes and slowdowns while surfing etc, and when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the "Close Program" screen, it says "SMC NOT RESPONDING".
I haven't a clue what SMC is, but it seems to be behind the glitches. Any advice?
I'm Win98SE and completely PC-illegitimate..

SMC is part of sygate firewall I think. Do you have it installed?

As for being PC illegitimate, that made me smile! My PC can an illegitimate child at times too!

Okay dewds thanx, hmm I might just take the easy way out and uninstall Sygate and get another free Firewall from somewhere, Sygates had its chance..

Or get the other version of Sygate mentioned there - it's a good little program otherwise.

If not, try Kerio.
