I am running windows XP. When I boot up it says something like SMART capable but disabled. It obviously goes too fast to read any more any ideas what this means please.

SMART - a name given to the way that some hard disks can check themselves for any errors and report them - your hdd is able to do this, but it has been disabled in the BIOS.

Thanks chaps is it then safe to enable it or best left alone????

LEave well enough alone as regards SMART was the advice I was given a few years ago and have not needed to challenge it for any reason. If you run windows scandisk / disk checker / defragger on occasion, then you will know if anything is wrong.

why disable smart Diodorus Siculus?

my advice is,if your hard drive has this function enable it.may just give you enough warning time to back up before it dies.
