Slower than expected broadband.

I have switched ISP from Nildram 512 service to Demon 2mb service. The speeds shown on the taskbar seem about the same as they were around 570kbps. I phoned Demon's helpdesk and after trying various things I was told to speed check the connection (on bt's speedtest site) every 4 hours for the next two days!! So the demon could go to bt and report a fault on my connection. The speeds so far vary from 478 to 482kbps which seems pretty constant. Demon suggested that the fault was with my connection or at the exchange and the checks were necessary to prove a fault to bt. When I initialy checked the line it showed 1mb available, a friends house about 100m away shows 2mb available. What do you think? Fault or just bordering too far away from exchange? Although cousin (it bod) claims he knows people further away with 2mb working fine.

Just gathering informationabout speeds over the weekend will get in touch with Demon and BT on Monday. What is odd though is that on te bt speed test site it states that:
"BT would regard speed ranges shown below as normal service
250 kbps end users speeds between 50 - 250kbps
500kbps end users speeds between 100 - 500kbps
1000kbps end users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps
2000kbps end users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps"

So reading that they may that what I'm getting is good enough!
