slow system - zone alarm - vsmon.exe

Had terrible recent problems with pc grinding to a halt and all memory being sucked up. Traced the problem and found a lot of people have similar experience with the vsmon.exe part of zone alarm. Using task manager and shutting down vsmon frees up the cpu instantly, but of course it kicks back in when you go online. Trouble is, i cannot access or remove the file as access is denied. Similarly I cannot uninstall zonealarm because of vsmon.exe. Vicious circle.
Any help advice greatly received.

Have you checked that True Vector is set to Enabled in MS Services?

Nope. Can you explain a bit more ?

Although shutting it down in task manager has made it settle down to normal. cpu usage is only averaging aroung 14% now with several app's running instead of 99% !
