Slow start up when restored to factory settings

  NO.6 03:31 01 Apr 2010

I have a five year old 40GB laptop running XP home edition. I have restored it back to factory settings and the only programs I have installed are AOL 9.1, AVG 9, Spybot S&D and Mozilla Firefox browser. I have windows update enabled so new software updates are still coming in (so far up to SP2), but it still seems to take several minutes to to boot up when turned on and I find I only have abot 24GB free space. Is this normal? I can't think that the software updates would take up that much space or am I wrong !.......Just curious.

Probably Microsoft updates being installed.
Drivers needing updating.
Make sure AVG is not running a scan at start up set it to another time or do it manually.
Maybe switch the tea timer off on Spybot.
