Slow or short range wifi?

Hi everyone, First time poster here.

A few weeks ago my laptop wifi started cutting out when I was using it upstairs. The router is downstairs in the dining room and this worked fine for the past few years. I haven't made any changes to my layout or anything else, I just started getting a very weak or non-existant signal. Curiously my iPod works just fine so I don't think it's a problem with the router.

I have updated my laptop software as much as possible (including uninstalling and reinstalling the adapter software) and this has made a small difference but nowhere near what it used to be. When I place the laptop right next to the router it works 100% but if I move more than six feet away I lose the signal again.

I am not tech savvy and don't know whether I need a signal booster, a new router or a whole new laptop (Lenovo - 3 years old). Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
