Slow connection speed problem

  Phender79 17:00 12 May 2008

Here's the problem. I have a Netgear DG834N router attached with ethernet cable to PC. Also have laptop with Netgear wireless N card installed. All working well, able to browse internet etc. Good signal etc. Can easily get 270Mbps all over the house with the laptop. Running XP Home on both.

However, in the routers setup page, in router status it shows that I am connected at ~6500kbps (download) and ~900kbps (upload). I have a "up to 8mb line" so this would make sense.

However, my web browsing is really slow and when I do a speed test on various sites I always get ~700-800kbps download - how can this be. It's the same on both the PC and laptop.

I've tried everything - reset router, changed cables, cleared cache, pinged everything.

Also tried using the old Sagem modem. When I hover over the Network connection icon in the system tray it says "Connected 6.1Mbps" but still I'm only getting ~800kbps when doing speed test.

Either the router is lying and I'm only getting ~1-2Mbps or there's something wrong somewhere.

If anyone can help, on needs any more information let me know.

Thanks for your help.

I have the same router.

If you remember with a modem you used to be able to hover the cursor over the icon on the Task Bar and it would give you a speed.

That was not your connection speed but the speed the line was capable of.

I think it is the same with that reading in the statistic section of the Netgear because mine is currently reading 8805 yet my speed test shows just less than 5meg.

What speed testing facility are you using? Try the one at click here It is usually quite accurate. The router status speeds of 6500kbs and 900kbs are unusual. What service provider are you with? UL speeds are usually only half of 900kbs and DL speed should read 8168kbs.

That is a good point - my router's statistics are reading : (approx) 8meg up and 4meg down.

And you can use the BT direct test by following the advice on click here as long as its ADSL IPStream

Ok really then I need to know - does the Netgear router show possible line speeds or actual connection speed. I'm surprised where I am that I can get more than 4mb download. Here's all my router stats:

Router Status

Account Name
Firmware Version V1.02.08

MAC Address 00:1B:2F:3E:00:0B
IP Address
Network Type PPPoA
IP Subnet Mask
Gateway IP Address
Domain Name Server

LAN Port
MAC Address 00:1B:2F:3E:00:0A
IP Address
IP Subnet Mask

ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023b.d20e
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 6592 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 832 kbps
VCI 38

Wireless Port
Region Europe
Channel 6
Wireless AP Enabled
Broadcast Name Enabled

And the pther stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6592 kbps 832 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.0 db 23.0 db
Noise Margin 12.3 db 8.0 db

Basically from this info can u determine what a broadband speed test should show because I'm still getting ~800-1000kbps on all the tests I've tried.

Any ideas
