Slow computer

A friends computer was very very slow so he asked me to have a look at it. I formatted it and it was still the same so I thought it was the hardrive. I put in a new hardrive and an extra 256mb ram. So now the spec is 1.6GHz, 480mb ram!! and 80GB hardrive though it is still very slow. Could the processor be on the way out or is there something else it could be? Thanks. Also why does it show 480 when there are 2 x 256 sticks in it!

Does it have on-board graphics - that might account for the 'missing' 32MB although 64 MB is more usual.

I believe it has got on board graphics.

if you have two lots of memory, there could be a conflict. Try two of the same make or new strip.

Hi,

I`m not an expert but I believe that if we forget basic things we can have problems.

Have you got AdAware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster and cCleaner installed on the PC? If so run them, especially cCleaner. Then have a look at the anti virus you should have and run that, accepting all it`s findings. Beyond that i just don`t know, unless it`s an old OS.

What do you mean by Slow? as this can mean many things to different people. What is the CPU? is it a AMD or what. You have coverd just about everything. It could be the Onboard Graphics that's SLOW not the Computer

What Operating system is it using?

It is an AMD with XP Pro. It is a clean install so ccleaner etc is not necessary and it is has Norton systemworks. It even takes 10-15 secs to open a word doc.
