"Size" and "size on disk" - what's the difference?

What's the difference between "size" and "size on disk" obtained when you right click on a folder in XP and click on "Properties". What I want to know is the approx size in kb of all the files in a folder when I upload them onto a web server.

i think its to do with cluster size, if your using say 8kb clusters, a 20kb file would use 24kb of space, as the disk only allows mutiple of 8kb.
