simple networking problems

I know very little about networking, but am currently trying to solve 2 networking issues - can anyone help please?

1. At work - we have 2 pc's networked thru a hub. Sales manager has a laptop which we would like to link to the network when he is in the office. We plugged the laptop into the hub and worked thru the wizards, but no joy.

2. At home - I have 2 pc's that we are trying to link together with just a simple Belkin starter kit (2 cards and a length of cable which we have run thru the loft between the 2 rooms). Went thru the instructions in great detail. Both computers show a network with only themselves on i.e. a 1 computer network!

Can't help feeling that if I understood networking better I'd be able to solve both of these problems easily.

Thanks in advance.

Try here click here to get a better understanding of networks. There are plenty of other websites out there. Some of the more regular users on here know of some great sites that I am sure they would be happy to recommend. Good luck!!

This looks like an excellent site - so simple, dare I say foolproof?!

Will try again when I get time and update here with results.

Thanks very much
