Whenever I click on the show desktop icon on the bottom tray it goes back to the desktop but then the icons take ages to appear, usually they start as the unassociated version.

sounds like you need to carry out a disk check, clean up and a defragmentation to me

I've defragged but this has made no difference.

Could you give us your full specs please

it could be that you have a lot of programmes running in the background and this could be the cause of the problem

have you tried start>run msconfig

now look in the startup tab and see what is running in the background

If there are programmes that you know that are running at startup then un-check them

What OS are you running? i.e. Windows XP. How much memory is there in your computer?

  [DELETED] 18:39 03 Sep 2003

Im using Windows XP, with 256MB of memory, there are 25 programs running, which ones can I turn off?????

  [DELETED] 19:12 03 Sep 2003

turn off the ones you recognise and click here for a full search list of start up items

May help to be able to turn some services off.

A little more ram would be very handy.

You can also help by using Microsoft TweakUI for Windows XP - there is a facility to rebuild iconsd - though this may not be directly linked to your problem there are several other useful "housekeeping" tools there too.

You can download it from the Microsoft PowerToys site at

good luck,
