Should I renew previously free sub to Norton AV?

Norton AV and firewall came 'free' with my new pc but the two months of 'free' use are now almost at an end and I am debating whether to pay for a year's sub or whether to go for the free AV that everyone recommends on this forum - can't remember it's name at the moment. My problem is really just that Norton is behaving OK at the moment (on my old pc I had McAfee which was a bit temperamental) and I don't know how easy it will be to get rid of Norton, or whether it will conflict with a different (free) AV.
I am running XP but without the 2nd update thingie (I'm reserving judgement on that too!). As you can tell, I'm not too confident about techie things.
Advice, encouragement etc all most welome.

I've been using Norton AV and Utilities FREE for over 4 years. Just reinstall Windows occasionally and when you reinstall Norton you get another year free you just need to spend half an hour downloading the updates and virus definitions! I will admit to paying for it once but it only cost about £8.
