Should I be nervous of purchase?

I have just bought a 250Gb 7200 rpm IDE hard drive for £39.99 from Maplin (reduced from £69.99).
I have yet to tear open the pack as I may well return it unless I can be convinced it sounds like a good deal after all because ...
there is no manual or CD (I may need overlay software)
made in China
Hitachi but not sure it's the Hitachi we love and know.
Am I right to be wary?

In my limited experience, hard drives don't come with a manual or a CD.

Maplin is a reliable name and I'd be extremely surprised if they were selling counterfeit goods. But if you're concerned that this isn't a genuine Hitachi product, why not give them a call for reassurance?

It sounds like you have an OEM hard drive. Most hard drives come in this format, just the drive and nothing else. You don't need a manual for the drive, as the jumper markers will be labelled on the actual drive itself and I have never heard of needing a CD for a hard drive. Windows has all the drivers and the manufacturers utlities are freely available on the internet should you need them.

over the years i have found oem hard drives
are a good buy you do not get all the usual
extras but if you think how often do you use it

i have replaced many hard drives over the years and oem drives are a good deal
if you do need some of the programs to install drive try tha hitachi web site

A 250gb Hitachi can be had from here for £28.79

Or a 400GB for £37.87 sounds like a better deal to me

Both are currently out of stock, but it's usually only a couple of days, before new stock arrives, ihave been using their OEM drives for a while now and never had a problem.
