You can even test the Windows Messenger Service by sendong a message to yourself.

Also test a specific port.

+ a bunch of other things.

Da man himself tells you all :D

I use Proxomitron, which utilises port 8080 in the proxy server role - even so Shields Up, whilst declaring the port to be open, states that it is still in full stealth mode along with the other ports....

Paranoia appears to be setting in.....:-)

You've acknowledged my comment that port 8080 is always open on my system (the recommendation for Proxomitron came from my son, an IT support specialist responsible for nearly 3,000 machines), yet still worry.

My son would not have recommended Proxomitron if there was any potential nightmare scenarios.

He uses broadband, full wireless access and a server at his home and has only taken the standard precautions regarding firewalls etc.

In network connections. Right click your connection. Then go to NETWORKING do you have a tick in "File and print..." ?

In the NETWORK TAB again.

Highlight, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), now click proerties, Advanced, WINS, Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

But i found this "If you disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, you may not be able to connect to computers that are using operating systems other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP"

I think you are confusing an LAN with the main computer used as the default gateway with your case.....
