Sharing files on a wireless network

Friend of mine wants to know a solution

He has a pc hooked up to a router and modem using a ethernet cable.

His laptop is in another room and is hooked up to the router by wireless means.

He can get the internet on both the pc and the laptop.

How does he go about getting the laptop to access files/folders on the pc?

He will need to set some folders on the PC for sharing.
Right click on the folder and select Sharing, then give the folder a share name.
All files and folders within this folder will then be available across the network.

Don't just set the whole of your C: drive to shared though, as this would mean other users would be able to mess around with your system files.

Also, if you are sharing files across a wireless network it's imperative that you enable security in your wireless settings. At least WEP, but preferably WPA encryption.

So all he needs to do is allow the folder/file to be shared? Nothing else?

Any firewall software will also have to be configured to allow access to the networked computers in its "trusted" area.

If one of the computers is running XP "Professional" have a look at this page relating to Client Access - click here

Whoops, forgot about that

Yes, set your firewall to accept all communications within the IP range of the router (which will be found in the documentation, mine is a D-Link, and the range is - 254)
