i want to transfer my existing hard drive running windows xp to a new computer another computer and make it the master and make the other hard drive the slave how do i do this

With difficulty because the new PC will likely have different hardware components.

Do you have the XP CD?

If so, you can swap the disk across ok and then boot with the XP CD and do a repair installation. That may help...

Not if you back it up first.

Give some details of the software and hardware you have installed and you will get some guidelines for backing it up.

my old computer is running windows 98.
the drive i want to make my master is windows xp.
is this at all possible or is it best just to reformatt the drive and lose all my data

What data? anything in my documents can be copied to a cd so it will not be lost; same goes for address book, favourites and so on.

Do you have a cd writer? Or usb disk?
