Second hand laptop

Hi, I have been offered a Acer Travelmate 803LCI Laptop it comes with adaptor and battery and thats about it, There is no Hard drive no memory and no dvd/cd rom.
It powers up and the battery indicator come on but it does not boot up the screen stays black not a flicker.
Now I dont mind if I need to buy a hard drive, memory and a dvd/cd drive if the scrren is OK as I want it to load Linux on.
But i'm unsure wether the screen should boot to a BIOS screen or something or if it's just because there is things missing while it wont show any signs of life, Is there any way to test the screen.
As I say the case is in good order and he only want £20 which I dont mind if the screen is OK.

Hope someone can make some sence of my ramblings
Basically would the screen show any sign of life when switched on if there is no hard drive, dvd/cd drive, memory ?

Regards AJ

But you will need some RAM.

You can try using linux live CD which requires RAM but not hard drive to operate.

Technotiger so it's normal for the screen not to come on at all when these items are missing ?

I would expect a POST screen to tell you summats up.

Graham This is what worries me, I'm unsure of laptops and although it's ideal for what I need i'm unsure wether the screen is dead and ifso I'm not interested.

Not surprised there is no screen with no memory at all.

So Fruit Bat is there anyway to test whether or not it's working without any memory ?

I am surprised that you expected to see anything with no hard Drive or memory.

  Tony275 18:07 18 Jan 2009

So Compumac you can say for sure that it is normal for nothing at all to happen when no memory ram and hard drive are present ?
