Is it spinning when connected or making any noise at all ?

Is there any chance that someone pulled its plug out, without going through the normal "Removal" Routine?

Hi thanks I don’t think it’s making any noise I didn’t think it ever has or I can’t hear it And I have checked it is plugged in both ends Thanks

You say it shows in device manager but does it show in disk management, does it have a drive letter assigned to it if not right click on the drive and give it a drive letter.

Digger: I did not ask whether it was plugged in. I have added 3 words, in the past

When you want to disconnect an external drive you need to Eject it before disconnecting or it can stop working properly. If you unplugged or switched off when it was working that may have led to this issue. If it shows in Disk Management then you should see a drive letter after "New Volume#"

being the drive letter assigned to the external drive.

You should also see a Blue bar across the top of the partition not a Black one. And the words HEALTHY. I'm not an expert but I hope this helps.
