The screen on my windows 8.1 desktop occasionally freezes up - and neither the keyboard nor mouse will operate. What's the appropriate action to take - do I just switch off and restart, or can I do something to deal with the underlying problem? I'd appreciate any help - thanks.

Just a few questions for some more information:

  • Does the pc come back to working after some time or do you have to restart to fix the issue?
  • Has this always happened or is it only recently that it started?
  • Also could you give us the specs of the pc?

Freezing PC

  1. Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans - speed fan will show temperatures

  2. PSU voltages - speed fan will also show voltages

  3. Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off

  4. faulty memory stick try memtest click here virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use

  5. driver conflicts especially graphics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment

Thanks folks - - You've been very helpful! Just noticed that the grills on front of computer almost blocked off by dust etc. So I've cleaned with vacuum, and I hope that the issue is fixed. Didn't realise how clogged up it was.
