"Save AS" drop down menu file name removal

  Steinman 13:34 11 Nov 2003

When I go to "save as" a file - various types Txt, bitmap etc the file name drop down menu seems to have loads of previous names waiting there for me to choose from. Used to be helpful, but now there are so many it's becoming a pain. How can I clear these lists? Thanks

Right click on the one(s) you don't require and hit Delete.

Well, I have tried that & although they get deleted from the box they don't actually get deleted from list. So, anyone any more ideas?

Which program are we talking about BTW? Some programs will give you options with custom install.

Not talking about any specific program.
For example if I opened a text document, & went to save it then in the SAVE AS File Name box I'll have a drop down bit with loads of previous names I've saved text documents under. Same for Paint. If I were to SAVE AS then in the File Name bit drop down box there would be lots of previously used names. I just want to clear them all out, so that when I SAVE AS I dont get them all in a drop down box.

You'll need to search the registry from each program MRU list (Most Recently Used)

For example i found the MRU list for FrontPage 2002 at HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1229272821-492894223-1957994488-1004\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Open Find\Microsoft FrontPage\Settings\Save As\File Name MRU on my PC. Clearing the value works for FP 2002. I found by searching the registry for items listed on my drop down list.

the second approach is to use Spybot click here and enable it to look for Usage Tracks. It'll find a lot of these registry locations and allow you to clean them with a few clicks.
