Runtime Error

When I try to insert a picture into Word or Publisher, I get an error message

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime error!

(path to word.exe or Publisher.exe)

abnormal program termination

I'm baffled by this

If you have Office 2000 or later, try Detect and Repair from the Help menu.

I have Office XP Pro. I tried to repair but it has had no effect on the problem, I'm afraid

It happens with Explorer too. Would I be better removing Office suite and reinstalling?

  VoG II 20:37 28 Dec 2003

If Detect and Repair didn't fix it then I doubt if uninstalling and removing Office would either.

If it is also happening in (Windows?) Explorer, that suggests that it is a problem with Windows rather than Office. Can you confirm if you meant Windows Explorer, and which version of Windows are you using?

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (build 2600)

Yes I did mean Windows Explorer

Try using System File Checker. Start, Run, type in

and click OK. Have your Windows CD to hand.

Did that. It went through the procedure but gave no errors

Boot from the CD

Let the Setup go through the first part of the Installation procedure.

When you come to the screen in which it says "Welcome to Setup." press Enter to Setup Windows XP.

Press F8 to agree to the End User License.

Let the Setup search your system for previous versions of Windows.

When the Setup is finished searching your system, select your Windows XP Installation and press the R key on your keyboard to start the Repair Procedure.

Setup will delete all major system files and then replace them with new copies.

You will have to download all of the updates from Microsoft Windows Update again because it replaces the files.
