RPC service terminated unexpectedly

Can anyone help, I have Windows XP home installed on a laptop and, when connected to the internet a message box pops up after a short period reading: Your system is about to shutdown... Initiated by NT/Authority System. RPC Service Terminated Unexpectedly. What does this mean and how do I sort it out? Thanks

Max, you're a star. Thanks a lot, found the virus with the stinger and deleted it, so, hopefully all will be well now. Thanks again.
