Router / Skype

I'm looking into getting a Skype cable telephone and I have been told (in passing) that a router would enable this to receive skype calls without having the PC switched on all the time.

I know nothing about routers (other than the woodworking kind) so can someone tell me if this is true and describe how it works. I have 2mb broadband, if that is relevant.

Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks. Looks interesting terryf, but I suspect the actual call charges for our telephone at present is less than £7.99 a month. Most of it is line rental and broadband charges.

Has anybody any other suggestions.

It is as I thought - my call charges are about £9 a quarter, so I'm bumping this in hope of some further advice.
