Replacing a computer

Thinking of replacing my computer running Win98 with an up to date model with Win XP Home.
Any guide on how best to achieve the transfer with minimum aggro. Have a few errors on my hard disc so don't want to transfer everything at once.
Any help greatly appreciated

click here for a guide to backing up which can then be restored on the new PC.

If you have a CD-R drive, then you should find that burning to CD is easiest; otherwise get a USB pen drive which will also allow easy copying.

Look at click here and enter this product Code - 969714 into search. It transfers files from old pc to new pc via USB

Great advice but what about non-techies? Is it easy once you start or can one get into a tangle? e.g. what about address books, e-mail and downloaded systems that's one forgotten how one got. I also understand that one may have to find new drivers and re-input all one's applications. Sounds a lot of work where mistakes can easily occur. Can you put my mind at rest and if I follow your excellent advice should all be well?
Thanks for your interest!

Seems to be quite a problem but nothing ventured nothing gained. My present computer could die on me any minute so I'll have to replace it before it expires. Many thanks for your help. Hope I'll be able to help someone oneday,
