replacement ddr memory questions

  pharte 01:09 29 Dec 2004

I have been having problems with my comp crashing and shutting down since I first bought it.

I am going to try replacing the memmory module and see it that is the intermittent fault.

my system is running xp pro, athlon xp 2100+ processor, 256 ddr333 pc2700 ram on a MSI 745 ultra motherboard

my little book says it will take up to 3 x 1GB memory modules maximum but what about the MHZ speed as it doesn't mention it.

does it matter and what's the best way of going about it ?

Have a look in Administrative Tools> Event Viewer under System or Application- the error report can often point you in the right direction as to what's causing the problem.

If you see any errors, post the error text here and we can check it out.

does that mean anything to anyone ?
that was the info taken from the event viewer error.

I cannot copy and paste the description but in essence it says: the description for this event cannot be found.

mr greenlamp I looked at the link and have not tried to download the memory test yet, although I have tried a different one a couple of times before and they have reported no memory problems.

try a repair of XP
sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in

windows and eplorer.

This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is

not preinstalled on the hard drive.

cheers fruit bat since i bought the system around 2 years ago I have done that, re installed and re formatted around a dozen times, removed, reinstalled and damm near tried every checker, programme and other advice given on here and on the microsoft site.

As It must surely be something physical inside the computer that is having an intermittant fault I thought it may be usefull to replace things starting with my memmory module and give myself an increase whilst i'm at it.

so back to the original question......... is there any special considerations I need to be aware of before buying new memory and what is the speed thing all about (mine is 333mhz and I am unsure if a 400mhz will be ok)
