Removing MSN instant messenger from startup

I keep removing MSN Messenger from startup using the tools/startup option in CCleaner - but it keeps re-instating itself like some virus! Is there any way to have it just as a desktop icon that I can open when I want to rather than have it popping up when I switch the comp on?

go into options/preferences and remove the tick from start when windows does, or similar

You will probably have to go into Run,then type msconfig and untick it on start up.apply Ok.When you reboot computer a box will appear just tick the little square .Ok

Or have you tried Msn Tools ,Options,General. And un-tick Automatically run messenger when I log on to window, Apply Ok..

Going into messenger, and startup via msconfig seems to have sorted it - many thanks all!
