Removing files from password protected HDD

  Den 12:10 11 Dec 2009

I have removed the HDD from a friends faulty laptop.

Trying to recover his .jpg pics from his 'my pics' folder but it will not allow me to enter the folder to copy the .jpg files. He had his XP O/s password protected. Is there any way that I can access this folder?

As long as you can see the Drive letter, you may be able to recover the photos with click here

Create a New Folder on your Desktop then browse to the new folder, within the program, as the destination for any saved pics.

Access Files
If you get Access Denied in WinXP Pro. Try “taking ownership” of the file/folder before it can be accessed. First of all go to Folder Options, View Tab and in the Advanced Settings at the end, untick “Use simple file sharing”, which will allow the Security Tab to be shown in the file’s properties. Also, in Folder options, make sure hidden and system files can be viewed.
To take ownership of the file (it’s best done at the folder level), right-click it, Properties, Security Tab, add your user name, fill in all the permissions and Apply. You can now access it.

Access Files XP Home
Simple file sharing is enabled by default in XP Home
Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.
click here and click on the link at part one and download the required program.
Follow the instructions and the security tab will be enabled. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY OR YOU COULD DENY ACCESS TO ALL YOUR FILES.

Thank you 'Technotiger' and 'Fruit Bat /\0/\' I have not ignored your responses but have been busy with them.
First I installed the useful little didi recovery prog. It treated my laptop HDD as a camera mem card and after 7 hours I had over 19000 pics but non of the hidden ones ( all windows and programme icons).
I then tried the file sharing routine, which I use myself but it still would not get passed the block. Giving me ' an error occured while trying to share MY Documents. Access Denied.

Am still trying.....

Thanks again for prompt response.

How did your friend password protect these files.

If they used a program that they install you may have to install this program on your computer to enter the password and access the files.

..or have they used Windows EFS?

Many thanks to you all, 'Fruit Bat /\0/\' had it, I eventually changed the ownership and that did it but thanks to all the contributions, I will keep a note of them for future ref.
