Removing a boot sector virus

  [DELETED] 23:26 02 Sep 2003

I thinkI have a boot sector virus (possibly Form). I cannot access C drive. I get message 'Please type Command Interpreter' and then 'Invalid media type, Abort, retry, Fail'. If this is a virus how can I attack & remove it?

You will have to kill and rebuild the MBR (master boot record) this varies on what OS you are using.

The only problem is you will lose everthing on the drive so back up what you want to keep first, which you cant.

You can rewrite the MBR and it should not do anything to stop your from booting into windows.

Pop a boot disk in (98 one is ideal ;-) ) click here

Let the computer boot from the floppy.

When you come to the prompt A:\>

Type: fdisk /mbr

So you should have A:\>fidsk /mbr

Click ok and it will pause for a few seconds, its actually rewriting the MBR then when its finsihed, Restart.

A:\>fdisk /mbr
