Reinstalling XP

Was going to reinstall XP on my PC tonight. I've done it before several times on previous pc's so I know what I'm doing.

So I pop my XP disc into the drive, set the machine to boot from the drive and start it up and nothing happens! Well nothing happens for about a minute while it tries to boot from the disk and then it must move on to booting from the hard drive as it just starts normally.

The onlt think I can assume is that the disc drive isn't working, I must admit I havnt used it for about a year. I did look at system manager however and all appears to be fine, it says everything is working properely etc.

Is there anything else I can try, I did put a movie dvd into the drive to test it and that didn't work either, nothing happened at all.

If the drive isn't working I'm guessing that bang goes reinstalling XP?

If you put the XP disc in the Drive are you able to look at it's contents via 'My Computer' Windows Explorer?

on second thoughts, does the drive even show up in 'My Computer'?

Yes the drive shows up on my computer but when I click on it the pan that comes up is completely empty.

Going to try RDaves fix, thanks so far :)

If it's only the laser that is not working then the drive will show in the my computer but not actually work. you could try swapping the drive for another one or use an external one.

It sounds as if the CD/DVD reader has failed,If you open the disk in Explore mode (Right click and select explore), can you see the contents?.

If not then you need to get another DVD/CD reader to test it on (a friend?), if OK there there you need to get another reader.

Just tried my XP disc in one of the PC's at work and it shows up there, asked me if I wanted to install from the disk so I rather quickly said no :)

Do I just need to get an external drive then, and if so what type?

  1. check the data cable is fully pushed home at the motherboard and drive ends

  2. No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41 Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager. (This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.) Download and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect. This utility is only intended for Windows® XP, but also appears to work for Vista and Windows 7. You may need Administrator level access to use this utility. If you do not have Administrator level access, the program will say it is finished, but will not have made any changes.

Similar fixes works for W7 Vista or XP

or manual fix Run regedit and navigate to registry key HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them. Close regedit and restart the computer. If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.
