Using Toshiba's original recovery CD, we are trying to reinstall windows 98 on a 3110 Portege laptop, starting with the DOS boot disk but the CD driver wont load. We can't even open the CD drawer. Can anyone please suggest how we proceed from here?

why are you trying to reload, and is the recovery disc in the cdrom

Thanks Menorcarob2. No, the recovery disc is not in the CD Rom. The CD drive works OK when windows is installed. But DOS CD driver will not load. We have tried Toshiba website for advice without success. Since technical support is not available over the Bank Holiday, can anyone please help us out of this jam?

try to get to the bios by pressing ¨f2¨ or what it needs to get to SETUP as the machine does it post, then tell it to boot from the cdrom, some recovery discs will erase your whole HDD so pay attention to what it says as it goes through its setup.

We shall certainly try this advice but this is an external CD and, if it still does not load, have you any further suggestions. Thanks for trying so far.

We have tried your suggestion which did not work. The problem is that the original boot disk will not initialise the CD Rom, as we expected, to reinstall windows 98 and, until we know how to get psat this problem, we cannot progress to clear and restore. If anyone does have the solution it could save us having to arrange another weekend to get the job done.

I have a Toshiba Sattelite 2800/100, This is what the manual states

(1) Load the Product Recovery CD-ROM and turn off the power.

(2) Hold down the C key and turn on the power. When the IN TOUCH WITH TOMORROW "TOSHIBA" appaera, release the C key.

(3) Follow the on-screen instructions

(4) After recovery is complete, remove the Product Recovery CD

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart your system

I realise the above applies to my system recovery and yours may be different, but you should be able to view a manual for yours on the Toshiba website and down load the appropriate instructions. As your CD Drive is external I am sure it will not be recognised in DOS (From the boot Floopy) so there must be another way to restore. Hope this helps

Sounds like you are using a PCMCIA drive. If this is the case then you need to find the drivers for the PCMCIA card first. The link below relates to a Sony, but it should give you an idea of what you're up against.

AH

you need to have the TSR drivers for your cd_rom on the boot floppy then re-write the config_sys file and autoexec-bat files so that the drivers load.
