Reinstall windows into partition

I intend to reinstall Windows xp, but would first like to partition my hard drive using Partition Magic, the idea being that I can backup all my files onto one half. Is it then possible to reinstall windows onto the "clean" half and start afresh, or do I need to format the whole hd?

When you have created 2 partitions, you can just format the one partition you want to install Windows onto, and leave the other as it is.

No just install XP onto the first half. You can backup documents and emails etc onto the other half, but not your applications and programs - they will need re-installing.

Thanks. Is it possible to have windows running on both sides?

Yes, I've got Windows 98 and two installs of XP on one HD, all work fine.
