Reducing the size of Wma files using MP3

I have transferred my collection of vynal LP's to my hard disk in WMA format. I hoped that converting them into MP3 would reduce the size,it does not,why not?
Please is there anyone out there who can explain.

You won't get much, if any reduction in size because WMA and MP3 are both compressed files anyway.

mp3 and wma are compressed forms of wav files.

They are just different flavours of the same thing. They both on average will reduce a 4 minute 40MB wav file to 4MB.

You could reduce the bit rate for either but whilst this will slightly reduce their size it will also reduce their quality.

Thanks octal and bremner. This is what I feared
