Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel, and double-click Modems.

Select your modem and click Properties. On the General tab, adjust the modem volume slider. If this doesn't work, go to the Connection tab and click the Advanced button to bring up the Extra Settings field.

Then enter the command in Extra Settings: ATM0 ,to silence the modem; ATM1 ,for noise to continue until connection is established; ATM2 ,for it to make noise whenever in use; or ATM3 ,for no dialling sounds but noises from when number dialled to connection established.

It can be useful to hear the modem dialling out - you will be able to tell if there is something wrong by the changing in the dialling tone.
