Recovering data from old laptop hard drive

  buzz_ig 13:13 22 Dec 2007

I have put the hard drive from an old laptop into an external caddie and connected it to my computer in the hope of copying any important files off it. Trouble is, the hard drive is not visible in 'My Computer'.

I can see the drive in Disk Management, it has 2 partitions (10Mb & 39.24Gb) but neither has a drive letter associated with them, and the only option I get is to 'Delete Volume'

Is there any way to view the drive contents?

Hi, I am not sure if is any help BUT you have nothing to lose,

If using XP download Tweak UI click here then run it,

Then expand my computer then click on Drives,

Are they all ticked,

Try changing/giving it a drive letter .....

Probably should have said, I'm running Vista and TweakUI doesn't seem to install.

In Disk Management, I do not get the option to assign a drive letter, it is greyed out.

I have found the problem. The hard drive had Norton GoBack installed on it, which created an unrecognised partition.
click here has the solution, except I can't get hold of a copy of partedit that words.

Got partedit working on an XP machine, can now access all the data and everyone's happy
