Recording from audio cassette player > PC

This is probably a daft question - if I get the cable, could I record by connecting headphone socket on tape player to line-in on PC [running XP]?
Or do I need a software package and/or some other means of connection.
Thanks

The simple answer is yes. Use a lead with the appropriate plugs and a software package to do the recording and editing. There are plenty of free software packages online. I've used Goldwave with good results. click here

I like things simple! Thanks a lot, I'll go buy a lead, then give it a go.
