Realtime priority in Windows Task Manager

I have discovered that when running a virus scan (for example) you can speed it up a bit by changing the Process priority in Windows Task Manager from 'normal' to either 'above normal' or 'high'
However I also have tried changing the priority to 'realtime' and my PC slowed down for a while and then crashed!
What is the purpose of REALTIME as it can't be much good if it causes your PC to crash?
