Read receipts in Outlook

Where I work I use Outlook 2000 as my default e-mail reader/sender (well someone has to).
When I recieve an e-mail I am unable to determine whether it has a read receipt attched to it or not.
I do know that if it does, ten I automatically send a read receipt as soon as I open it. I tried turning this off in 'preferences' but the whole area is greyed out with a message that says 'This option only applies to e-mails sent to internet transports. The automatically send a read receipt box is checked but greyed out so I cannot uncheck it.

I would like not to send out any read receipts at all as I find them as irritating as Keith Chegwin.

Any ideas or programs available to help?
