Ram speed and gaming performance?

  Coupon 23:38 23 Jan 2008

If I changed my RAM from PC2-5300 (667mhz) to PC2-6400 or even PC2-8500 would it make much difference in gaming performance?

Vista 32bit
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
Nvidia 7800GTX
3Gb 667mhz Dual Channel Ram

I think the difference would be negligible, especially with that amount of memory. A faster CPU would be a more effective speed boost.

It all depends on what is the limiting factor - and that varies from game to game.

If, for instance, the game is running as fast as the graphics card can manage - then no change of RAM speed will make it run faster.

Are you sure that with 3GB - which I presume could be three modules, that your RAM is actually running in dual-channel mode?

Usually this only operates with pairs of RAM.

Yup, 2 sticks of 512mb and 2 sticks of 1gb. CPU-Z tells me it's running in dual channel mode.

That's fine then - previous comment still applies.

Check your motherboard carefully to see what combinations of RAM sizes/number of modules/RAM speed actually work.

Many modern motherboards get very tetchy if you try and push them too far.

leave the ram alone and replace the graphics card with an 8800gt
