A question for MartinT-B

  ribo 16:00 10 Dec 2003

If I may be so bold as to ask you a question direct.
I have an Asus A7N8X deluxe MoBo.I have 1 stick of 512 mb ram.(PC3200 DDR400)(I do not know which slot it is in at present) Can you tell me please what would be the best way to upgrade my ram. ie One more stick of 512? two sticks of 256 and depending on your answer which slots would I put them in.? Thanks in advance. J

ps. because of the cost, would 2 stick of 128 be a good alternative?

I know I am not Martin T-B,

But if you will let me answer:

You are best going for another 512Mb DDR: PC3200 DDR400 slot and sticking it right aside the one that is already in.

Does the board support Dual Channel DDR?

  Gaz 25 16:21 10 Dec 2003

You see then the PC has to do less swapping to differnet RAM modules.

  Gaz 25 16:24 10 Dec 2003

Unless as Jester2k II suggests Dual channel then any combo will work well.

But as a guide:

They must be all the same speed - PC3200 in your case.

The highest RAM should go in DDR1 slot.

Unless Dual channel always go for one main slot or if you have to have two make it decent size.

Never mix types such as DDR and SDRAM.

Better to get the same manufacturer for both modules to ensure reliability and compatibility., but its not the end of the world.

yes. The board does support Dual channel, that is why I thought there was an advantage of selecting the correct slot. MartinT-B suggested in another thread that Slots 2 and 3 (Blue) or 1 and 3 Black/blue was best, but I do not know the make of the ram I have, and I was under the impression that they would be best if they were a matched pair.. By Matched does it just mean the same ram?

  Jester2K II 17:05 10 Dec 2003

Matched pair means same size, make, model, speed etc. To make full use of Dual Channel its best to buy as a matched pair.

  Gaz 25 17:08 10 Dec 2003

As jester2K II suggests.

  ribo 17:21 10 Dec 2003

would it be best then to buy 2 stick of 256 (or 128) as a matched pair and put them in slots 2 and 3? if so where would I put the 512 stick I have now and because it is not matched wouldt that be detremental? J

  Jester2K II 17:56 10 Dec 2003

You need to look at the mobo manual to see which slots are the matched pair slots. Sometimes its 1 & 2, sometimes 1 & 3...

Thank you both for your help, J
